Green Balkans Association took part in an international seminar organized within the LIFE Sallina project, with over 150 participants. The meeting took place in the French town of La Baule, adjacent to the famous saltworks of Guérande, on the French Atlantic coast. The salt pans of Gerand are known for their thousand-year history, dating back to the Iron Age. The method of extracting and collecting the salt has not changed over time, similar to the salt pans in Pomorie Lake in Bulgaria.

Birds in the Lake
16.12.2022
Winter is already gaining strength, and Lake Pomorie shelters an increasing number of wintering species. During the last monitoring conducted by our experts, an active migration from the north was registered, despite the relatively mild weather in recent days. Falling temperatures, shorter days and heavy snowfalls in the northern parts of the continent cause thousands of birds to make a long and exhausting journey south to places like Pomorie Lake, where they find food, peace and rest.

This year again, more than 20 volunteers came to the lakeshore to help for the conservation and restoration of it. The work is not easy, it is often associated with heavy physical labor, heat and sometimes wind and rain. But for lovers of the beautiful Bulgarian nature, this is never an obstacle.

Sandwich terns' colony
08.07.2022
During the monitoring we had the pleasure to observ the chicks of the Sandwich terns in the colony on the artificial island built by volunteers of the Association. The chicks are already in the phase of their first feathers, actively fed and cared for by their parents, and very soon they will make their first flight. In a slightly earlier stage of their development are the juveniles of the Common terns, whose colony for another year is located on the islet in the salt pan in front of the Salt Museum.

The work of Green Balkans on the project Life for Pomorie Lagoon continues, in which our team partners with the BFB, Tour de Valat (France) and Pomorie Salinas. The project aims to improve the habitat of the lagoon, its hydrological regime and, as a result, the nesting conditions of priority species such as Sandwich and Common terns, Avoset and Black-winged stilt, as well as many other protected species of waterfowl.

In the period 25-27 May we held a trip and a meeting to exchange experiences with colleagues from the Po Delta Park in Emilia Romagna, Italy. There, the team of the Life for the Pomorie Lagoon project from the Green Balkans and the BBF met with the experts of the LIFE TRANSFER project, which is being implemented in Italy, Spain and Greece. The activities of the two projects were discussed, which are similar in that they aim to preserve the priority type of natural habitat - 1150 Coastal Lagoons - albeit in different ways. While in the project LIFE for Pomorie Lagoon the activities are aimed at restoring the hydrological regime of the lagoon and improving the nesting conditions of typical bird species, the LIFE TRANSFER project restores habitat macrophytes such as beaked tasselweed and seagrass.
