On January 20, a Green Balkans team conducted bird monitoring at Pomorie Lake. The activity is part of the international census of waterfowl across the Western Palearctic (the bioregion that encompasses Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East).
Despite the relatively mild weather, typical wintering species for the lagoon were observed – Mallard, Common pochard, Eurasian wigeon, Mute swan, Coot, Red-breasted merganser. Along with them, a number of plovers also find food and shelter in the lake – Common redshank, Kentish plover, Grey plover, Eurasian curlew, Greater flamingo. In total, 2962 individuals of 31 species were registered.
The absence of numerous clusters of the typical winter species of Coot was striking, despite the favorable conditions for this. No wintering species of gulls were registered either. The most likely reason for this is climate change, which over the last decade has caused the seasonal distribution areas of many species to shift, the most notable such case, about which we have repeatedly informed you, is with the globally endangered species of Red-breasted goose, which is now rarely found in our country. Another species that is undergoing such changes is the Greater flamingo, which has recently been registered to nest in our country for the first time.
Unfortunately, our team also encountered a number of violations of the regime of the protected area. In the marine part falling within the SPA Pomorie, unregulated catching of clams was registered. And in the western basins of the lake, a fishing net was found. A signal was sent to the relevant responsible institutions for these violations.
Our appeal is – do not tolerate criminal behavior against nature! It is your responsibility as citizens to report it. Nature is the source of all resources for our society, for all of us. And in this sense, poaching is an attack on your well-being as well.
