From October 18 to 20, in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius an international meeting was held, dedicated to the conservation of the Common and Little tern, as well as other colonial species of birds nesting on islands, in which experts from several countries took part - Bulgaria, Belarus, Georgia, Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovakia, Poland and others.

The meeting began with a seminar on "Conservation of Island-Breeding Bird Species: Challenges and Best Practices", with focus on the challenges facing the conservation of terns and other bird species. One of the topics during the seminar was Telemetry technologies for the conservation of breeding waterfowl, and the participants were presented with new developments in the field and the results of their application. Another important topic that was touched on was the cooperation between industry and nature conservation.

The Green Balkans team introduced the international audience to the Association's activities in restoring the habitats of nesting birds in Pomorie Lake - building islands and placing wooden platforms for nesting Sandwich, Common and Little terns, Black-winged stilt, Pied avoset and others. Also presented were the results of the recently completed “Life for the Pomorie Lagoon” project, which includes activities such as renovating the island housing the Sandwich tern colony, building wooden nesting platforms for Common terns and Avosets, improving the hydrological regime of the lake and restoring habitats.

During the field tour, the results of the LIFE TERNS project of the Lithuanian Ornithological Society were presented to the participants. A visit was organized to the artificial islands in the Nemunas River, built during the project and sheltering hundreds of nesting terns and gulls during the summer. Colleagues from different countries shared interesting facts and new data about the habits of nesting waterfowl. And the immense beauty of the Lithuanian moist forests reminded everyone that nature has no boundaries and today more than ever we need to join forces for its protection.
