During the regular monitoring of the biodiversity of Pomorie Lake, conducted within the project LIFE for Pomorie Lagoon, a record number of the species Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus) - 658 individuals.
The Pygmy cormorant is a fish-eating bird, adapted to wetlands - seas, lakes, dams, rivers and more. The European population of the species is estimated at 37,600 - 50,400 pairs (BirdLife International 2015).
Data review on the avifauna of Pomorie Lake shows a maximum number of 425 individuals registered in September 2002.
The tendency for increasing the number of the species in the lake was noticed at the end of winter, and with the start of the spring season it reached the record number of 658 individuals.
In our country the Pygmy cormorant is a nesting, migrating and wintering species and is found all year round in the country.
The species is listed as endangered in the Red Book of the Republic of Bulgaria, protected throughout the country (BDA) and protected by the NATURA 2000 ecological network.
Project „Conservation of Pomorie Lake coastal lagoon” is implemented by Green Balkans NGO in partnership with M-Pomoriyski solnitsi Ltd, Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation and biological station „Tour du Valat“, France with the support of the financial instrument LIFE of the European Union. Project’s duration is from 1 September 2020 to 31 August 2023.
