New species for the Pomorie Lake registered

Little Bustard
15.03.2021
During regular monitoring of birds at Pomorie Lake made within LIFE19 NAT/BG/000804 LIFE FOR POMORIE LAGOON project a new species for the lagoon was recorded - Little bustard (Tetrax etrax). The species is listed as Extinct (EX) in Red Data Book of Bulgaria and NT in IUCN Red List.

It is believed that until the middle of the last century the species nested in the country. There are data for registered nesting pairs from the regions of Montana, Pleven and Eastern Dobrudzha in the late 19th and early 20th century. It has also been found in the region of Burgas Lakes. However, many negative factors - including the destruction and change of habitats (plowing, planting with monocultures), disturbance, poaching - lead to its extinction. Today it is an extremely rare visitor for our country, as there are separate reports of single birds in Coastal Dobrudzha.

In the area of Pomorie Lake our experts observed 2 individuals. With this, the list of species registered in the lagoon area increases by one more! Which for us is another reason to preserve this paradise and its unique nature.
