With the onset of spring, the migration process continues and the number of Sandwich terns (Sterna sandvicensis) on Pomorie Lake is increasing, as resting and feeding birds at the moment are about 200 individuals. In the last week, among the many terns, we had the chance to see those ringed in the local colony.

One of these terns has a CAB ring and was observed on April 15 this year. The bird was marked as newly hatched in 2010, then registered on wooden stiks infront of the Visitor Center in June and July 2012 and most recently in July and August 2014. Another bird with a mysterious history is the one with CDZ ring, which we observed on April 17. It hatched in 2011 and has since been observed only once in 2013 in the Poda wetland. We can only guess where the birds spent these 6-7 years, whether they continued to come to Pomorie Lake and where they nest. But the fact that they are here again after more than 10 years is a confirmation of the benefits of the efforts and work done in our activities.

On the wooden stiks infront of the Visitor Center on 17 of April the Sandwich tern with the CVD ring also arrived. The bird was ringed in 2013 as newly hatched on Pomorie Lake. In May 2015 it was observed in Catalonia, Spain - Vilanova and la Geltru. In May-June 2018 and in April 2020 the little traveler was infront of the Visitor Center in Pomorie. And in December 2020 he winters again in Catalonia - Palamos, Girona.

Pomorie Lake is home to one of the largest colonies of Sandwich terns in Southeastern Europe - a protected species that is emblematic of the Pomorie Lagoon. Thanks to the long-term efforts of Green Balkans volunteers to improve the nesting conditions of waterfowl, the number of nesting pairs from 6 in 1996 exceeded 2000 in 2013, 2015 and 2020.

The marking of young Sandwich terns was performed for the first time in Bulgaria on Pomorie Lake in 2010 and continued in 2011, 2012 and 2013. A total of 300 birds were marked for the entire ringing campaign.
