Life in Pomorie Lake is thriving

In the emergency conditions imposed on us by the pandemic, there is still a ray of light. Due to the reduced flow of people on the shores of the lake, life in the salt pans in front of the Salt Museum is thriving more than ever. More than 30 pairs of Pied avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta), 3-4 pairs of Little terns (Sternula albifrons), 3-4 pairs of Common terns (Sterna hirundo) and 2-3 pairs of Black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus) are currently nesting on the paths and the formed alluvial spits and islets, which delights nature and bird lovers. These are just a small part of the birds nesting in the lake. Many of them have also settled on the platforms built for this purpose, while others have taken refuge on the dikes in the lake and other suitable habitat for them.

The bird diversity is complemented by a flock of feeding Curlew sandpipers (Calidris ferruginea), which we observed recently in the same salt pan. For them, the lake is an important stop for rest and recharge on their long way of migration to Northern Europe, where the species nests.

Thanks to the surveillance system installed by Green Balkans, we have the opportunity to conduct continuous monitoring of the birds nesting in the area around the Visitor Center without disturbing them. Also, thanks to this, it is possible to provide you with regular information and photos about the condition of the nesting colonies, as well as interesting moments from their development on the Facebook page of the Pomorie Lake Visitor Center.

Currently, the birds lay their eggs, and in some nests they number up to 4-5 pieces. We hope to continue to provide safety for the birds so that they can successfully end this difficult rearing period.

The nesting bird species listed above belong to the so-called nest fugitives. These are species in which the young leave the nest immediately after hatching and rely on the help of their parents, a safe and secure environment and, to a large extent, good luck to survive. Often in such circumstances, they fall prey to terrestrial predators, stray dogs and cats, as well as unscrupulous citizens entering their habitats or walking their pets there.

On the islands in the lake, birds from the emblematic for the protected area species of Sandwich tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis) are currently preparing for nesting. So far, more than 1000 pairs have arrived, with more birds expected to arrive by the end of the month, and if conditions remain suitable for them, they will begin to incubate their eggs.

We are looking forward for the data from the Green Balkans ornithologists and we hope for record numbers of the priority species for conservation this season.

The island habitats of the colonial nesting birds in Pomorie Lake, created and maintained over the years by the volunteers of the association, have hosted protected species such as the Gull-billed Tern (Gelochelidon nilotica), Mediterranean gull (Larus melanocephalus), Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) and many others.
