Journey of the Sandwich Terns from Pomorie

***
04.03.2015
Sandwich tern (Sterna sandvicensis) hatched in 2012 at Pomorie Lake colony and ringed on 26 June the same year have been observed at Piemanson, Rhone Delta (Camargue) on the Mediterranean coast of France on 28 April 2014. The site is in the proximity of Saline de Giraud. Two observations from the Western coast of Italy complement the journey across the Mediterranean Sea: at Marina di Pisa on 14 March 2014 and further north at the mouth of Serchio River just few days ago on 20 February 2015. The observation is another link between two of the Natura 2000 sites where activities of MC SALT LIFE 10 NAT/IT/256 project are being implemented – this time situated in France and Bulgaria. During the past years Sandwich terns marked with colour rings have been observed regularly spending periods of their life cycle at the wetlands of Pomorie Lake, Bulgaria and Salina di Comacchio in Po Delta, Italy.
During the past week thanks to BOC we have got feedback for many observations of Sandwich terns hatched at the Pomorie Lake colony and marked with colour rings. Most interesting new sites include Canary Islands (Lanzarote), Montenegro (Bojana Delta) and Ukraine (Velykyi Adzhalykskyi Gulf). Out of 397 marked birds 67 have been reported alive and lively.
