During the 25th Pomorie Lake conservation working holiday organized by Green Balkans NGO, bird ringing activities in the area have been restarted again.

Scientific ringing of birds is a research method based on their individual marking with rings (colored and/or metal) with a code. The recapture of ringed individuals reveals highly valuable information about the biology, ecology, behavior, movements, nesting productivity, and population demographics of different species.

Successful ringing campaigns require suitable weather conditions, a good location, a lot of dedicated time and loads of patience. So far in 15 days we have ringed over 160 individuals from nearly 20 bird species. Some of the more interesting include: Eurasian penduline tit (Remiz pendulinus), Moustached warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon), Common whitethroat (Sylvia communis), Eurasian blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) and others.

With some interruptions due to deteriorating weather conditions (strong wind) in the area of Pomorie Lake, the ringing campaign continues. It is part of the monitoring activites of recently launched project LIFE 19/NAT/BG/000804 "Conservation of Pomorie Lake coastal lagoon" where Green Balkans NGO is paertner with M-Pomoriyski solnitsy EOOD, Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation and biological station Tour du Valat of France. The results will be used to update the ornithological database and assess the ecological status of specific habitats of the site and to determine relevant adequate conservation measures.

Project LIFE 19/NAT/BG/000804 "Conservation of Pomorie Lake coastal lagoon" is co-financed by financial instrument LIFE of the EU.
