The birds were ringed with a permission of the Minister of environment and waters. For the ringing were used standard ornithological rings and colour (blue and green) rings with a white three-letter code starting with the letter “C”. A total number of 153 Sandwich terns were ringed in 2010 and 2011 year. On eight of the birds were also put radio-transmitters. This bird marking is made within a research aiming to determine the important conservation areas for this species in the Burgas Bay in the Black Sea and to obtain additional information about the migration and attitude of the birds in the current global dynamic ecological context. The environmental NGO Green Balkans has been working for the protection of the Sandwich Terns and Pomorie Lake for 15 years now as this ringing was made within a project financed by Operational Program “Environment 2007-2013”.
We remind that within this same project was furnished the Visitor Center of Pomorie Lake, which was opened at the end of summer 2010. The center serves as a good research base and gives wonderful opportunities for birdwatching and environmental education on the bank of the saline lagoon of Pomorie which is also a Ramsar site.
