The summer conservation camp at Pomorie Lake

This year once again we managed to join forces and help the inhabitants of Pomorie Lake.

On September 5, a Green Balkans team, volunteers from three different countries and one donation made their way to Pomorie Lake to become part of a three-day adventure, which however does not include a beach break. A total of 24 volunteers joined this year's summer conservation camp to contribute their time and energy to helping nature.
For the first two days, the ongoing work was on the large artificial island in the lake, where activities included weeding and more uprooting. The removal of the vegetation will allow the island habitat to fulfill its exclusive purpose - being a resting and breeding habitat for a number of rare and protected species, part of the lake's ornithofauna.
Despite the large area of the island, a sufficient part of the terrain has been cleared, and in addition to migrating and wintering species, we hope to enjoy a noisy Sandwich Tern colony in the spring.

During the last day, the artificial facilities in the southeast of the lake were strengthened, once again rebuilt with the help of volunteers as part of the Green Balkans conservation program for Pomorie Lake. Over the years, they have nested Pied avocets, Common terns, Little terns, Gull-billed terns.

In addition to working under the scorching sun, volunteers also had the opportunity to become part of the ringing of songbirds.
Thus, in the unoccupied morning and evening hours during the three days of the summer conservation camp we were able to catch and ring only 3 birds. Despite the sparse results, the activity was sufficient to acquire basic knowledge of the methodology and significance of ringing.

As in any other summer conservation camp, work went lightly and in high spirits - whether in the mud, accompanied by French music, or simply because of the smile of a child who had just released a bird from their hands!

The Green Balkans team expresses its gratitude to Welde Lessocenter for the gratuitously provided building materials needed to strengthen the artificial facilities in the lake.

We would like to thank all the volunteers from Bulgaria, France and Russia who dedicated their rest days and became part of the conservation of the inhabitants of Pomorie Lake.

About Pomorie Lake

Pomorie Lake is a natural hypersaline lagoon, located on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, near the town of Pomorie. Home to over 260 different species of birds, over 30 mammal and over 80 plant species, since 2007 it is officially part of the largest coordinated network of protected areas in the world – the European ecological network Natura 2000.

About the artificial island on Pomorie Lake
The island was built in 2013 and provides suitable habitat for species nesting directly on the ground, such as Sandwich Tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis), Common Tern (Sterna hirundo), Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) and others. Their way of life makes them extremely vulnerable to the access of land predators, disturbance from humans and habitat loss due to coastal development.

About bird ringing
The ringing includes bird marking with a standard ring of the Bulgarian Ornithological Center (Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), which coordinates the research on migratory birds in Bulgaria. The re-catch of ringed birds allows exploring their migration  as well as many of their biological and environmental features.
