Green Balkans started celebrating the International Vulture Awareness Day in the very beginning of September this year with a special visit to the aviary in “Sinite kamani” Nature park, where together with children from Sliven, we were able to see what the Griffon and Black Vultures were doing in the park. The volunteer Deni and the kestrel Vladko from the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Centre joined in as well to tell more about the Centre’s work and some stories of its patients.

We invited our volunteers from the annual Green Balkans brigade at Pomorie lake on September 5 (Saturday) and together we celebrated the ecological date talking about the vultures in Bulgaria, how important they were for the ecosystem and what we did for their return.

A cognitive trip to the vultures in the park was organized on the same day by our colleagues from Birds of Prey Protection Society together with members of the Directorate of Vratsa Balkan Nature Park in which citizens from the region joined as well and together they went on a special route in the area of Dolno Ozirovo village. The people who love nature had the chance to observe 40 Griffon Vultures and 5 Black Vultures released in the Park as part of “Bright Future for the Black Vulture” project at the feeding site and surrounding areas.

All participants learnt new facts about the biology and ecology of the vultures, the risks for them as well as more about the work for their return.

The International Vultures Awareness Day is an international initiative aimed to inform the general public about the importance of these interesting and unknown birds to many of us. It is celebrated during the first Saturday of September each year and marks our quest for better understanding of the nature and its cleaning crew.
