During the last week’s monitoring three Sandwich terns marked with colour rings in Italy that are regular visitors at Pomorie Lake in tha past three years have been observed. These are adult individuals ringed at the Comacchio Salinas in Emilia-Romagna province on the Italian Adriatic coast.

Interesting is the fact that last observation of one individual is recorded on 23 Debruary this year on the Adriatic coast of Italy at Martinsicuro, Teramo province. The town is situated south of the Tronto River mouth at a distance of 1120 km from Pomorie in a straight line. Given the fact that migratory routes of the terns follow the coast probably this bird ahs flown more than 3000 km for less than a month!

In the vicinity of Tronto River (north of the mouth) is situated regional nature reserve “Sentina” that was included in the best practice manual “FOR A BETTER FUTURE: BEST PRACTICE IN NATURA 2000 NETWORK”. We remind you that in the same manual was included experience of Green Balkans NGO on restoration of water birds habitat at Pomorie Lake that created conditions for the settling of the largest Sandwich terns’ colony on the Balkans. The Sandwich tern observed for less than a month at the two sites proves the international importance of activities for wetlands conservation. Symbolically the two articles in the best practice manual – for Pomorie Lake and Sentina reserve – are published next to each other!

Monitoring of avifauna at Pomorie Lake is made within project LIFE10 NAT/IT/256 MC-SALT „Environmental Management and Conservation in Mediterranean Saltworks and Coastal Lagoons”, implemented with the financial support of financial instrument LIFE of the EU.
