We are celebrating the International Black Sea Action Day! 22 years ago on the 31st of October the six Black sea basin countries - Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, officially take measures against sea pollution and sign the Strategic Action Plan for the restoration and protection of the Black sea.

Green Balkans celebrated the date in 2 Black sea cities - Shabla and Pomorie. On the 29th of October children from the 3rd and 4th grade visited the Green Educational Center in Shabla where they learned more about the Black sea and its inhabitants. The children from the ‘Young nature lovers’ club at the Municipal Children Complex, Shabla were very motivated and enthusiastic to learn more about the sea and how to keep it clean. Our colleague, Polina Hristova, who had just come back from a sea expedition in the Black sea told the children what it’s like to be on an expedition and how does the monitoring of cetaceans go. The children got to see video materials from the expedition - video of dolphins feeding and playing together. We made photos and the kids made dolphin models to keep and take home. The teachers received posters, puzzles and a children book about ‘The adventures of Meriyem and Fanny the Dolphin’.

The next day our team visited the ‘Prosveta 1888’ Community center in Pomorie, where there were so many kids waiting for us, the auditorium couldn’t take them all in. Kids and their parents, as well as other guests, learned about the Black sea inhabitants and felt what it’s like to be an explorer. We told them about the cetaceans research methods, what it’s like in a marine explorer's day and what we can see in the sea from Durankulak to Rhezovo. The children were equally well prepared and told us more about the Black sea and their region’s history and showed us a model of the seabed they had made.

Natura 2000

Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Cetaceans
There are 3 species of cetaceans in the Black Sea - Bottlenose Dolphin, Short-beaked Common Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise, endemic to our sea. Persecuted in the past, not much is known today about the state of the populations of the three species. The Bottlenose Dolphin and the Harbour Porpoise are subject to protection by the Natura 2000 ecological network and special marine protected areas are declared for their protection.
