This Monday we celebrated the Earth Day with the students from the ‘Yordan Yovkov’ primary school, the Ecology Directorate, Plovdiv Municipality, District “North” and the “Gardens and Parks” Municipal Enterprise.

The district mayor – Mr Ralev, officially opened the event. Antoniya Danailova and Boyana Parapinska from the Ecology directorate talked about the problems with capturing songbirds and the Green Balkans team shared our experience in nature conservation.

Since this year’s motto is Protect Our Species, we brought our wildlife ambassadors – the griffon vulture, sandwich tern and red-breasted goose models and told everyone about their extraordinary lives.

This year’s Earth Day motto has been chosen due to the great loss of biodiversity in recent years, not only animal and plant species, but also great numbers of insects. To make things more interesting we organized a field monitoring with students at the park. We divided the children in two teams – vultures and ladybugs and while the vultures took a walk in the park to observe different urban bird species, the ladybugs identified insect species along with the Green Balkans team and learned new and interesting facts about different tree species in the park from Mirela Petrova from the “Gardens and Parks” Municipal Enterprise. All children participated in both exercises and learned how to use bird nets and why we put special rings on birds.

At the end we all took a photo together.

We’d like to thank all students and their teachers from ‘Yordan Yovkov’ school as well as our hosts from the Ecology Directorate and the “Gardens and Parks” municipal enterprise for the wonderful experience.
