From 11th to 13th of May the fourth workshop of the project LIFE10/NAT/IT/256 MC SALT “Environmental Management and Conservation in Mediterranean Saltworks and Coastal Lagoons” project, co-funded by the financial instrument LIFE+ of the EC, was held in Comacchio, Italy.

All partners attended the workshop hosted by the coordinating beneficiary “Ente di Gestione per i Parchi e la Biodiversita - Delta Del Po” (Italy), the Regional Nature Park "Molentargius - Saline" (Italy), Regional Nature Park “Camargue” (France), Biological Station “Tour du Valat” (France), CSME of Salins Group (France) and Green Balkans NGO (Bulgaria). During the workshop a monitoring visit was executed by Mr. Michele Lischi, representative of consortium Neemo, monitoring the projects supported by LIFE+ financial instrument of the EU and Ms. Ilenia Babetto, Technical Desk Officer for LIFE+ in DG "Environment" of the European Commission. The partners presented the progress of their project activities and in addition made presentations on the benefits to local communities from protecting natural ecosystems and biodiversity.

A field trip to the saltpans of Cervia, which continue to operate thanks to the municipality of Cervia was also part of the program. The partners had a first-hand experience with project outputs on site including replacement of water pumps for maintenance of water circulation, creating an observation tower and the construction of artificial islands for nesting of birds. Those actions kept valuable natural habitats, protected by the EU Directives, where you can find rare flora and fauna.

In the last day partners continued the work of both working groups of the previous meeting - to prepare a manual and guidelines for mitigation of Yellow-legged gull disturbance on colonial water birds and management model for saltwork. This action is expected to be one of the most important results of the project and work will continue until the end of 2015.
