22 May was declared by the United Nations (UN) for International Day for Biological Diversity with the aim to raise the awareness on problems and threats faced by biodiversity and to assure support for its conservation and protection. The holiday started to be celebrated since 1993 when the Convention on the Biodiversity entered into force.
Statistics show that in the past 50 years more than 60% of the species existing on Earth have been under threat or are on the edge of their survival.
Today we are “witnesses” (actually “authors”) of the largest extinction of species in the planet Earth’s history.
Hurrying up in our everyday life a few of us realize what the importance of the biodiversity is.
Practically the life and prosperity of each one of us depend directly on the biodiversity and the natural resources. No country or economy no matter what its economic development is can’t exist or develop without the use of natural resources or the biodiversity. From the feeding of humans to industry and everyday life everything is related to the state of the environment and the biodiversity. Unfortunately few of us realize that and take any steps to limit (and in particular their own) negative impact on nature.
We hope that at least today 22 May – the International Day for Biological Diversity we shall put the needed attention and we shall recognize its importance as we think about it at least for a moment and make our small steps for its conservation!
The Green Balkans team once again greets all its members and supporters and thanks them for the support caused through the years in our mission of biodiversity conservation!
