During the last days of the school year we visited the second graders from the ‘Vasil Levski’ primary school in Plovdiv.
We visited the young nature lovers and told them more about the red-breasted goose and the sandwich tern – protected species under the Biological Diveristy Act, as well as key species protected within the Natura 2000 network. We also took the opportunity to give them a Certificate of Adoption of a Grey Heron from the Green Balkans Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center in Stara Zagora, which is why we also told them more about the heron family.
Dr. Hristina Klisurova sent the Certificate of Adoption from the Rescue Center along with posters and thanked the children for their donation. The adoption of patients at the Green Balkans Rescue Center helps provide food and proper care for said bird for a certain period of time which is an invaluable help for the Rescue Center and its patients. You can find out more about adopting a patient at the Rescue center here.
Ms. Tomeva, their teacher, shared with us that teaching children the values of donation is essential for their education and that they are all very happy to help nature in Bulgaria.
We’d like to say a big thank you to the second graders and hope to see you again next school year :)
The event is part of the Green Balkans National Campaign celebrating the Natura 2000 Day – 21st May. Our organization is celebrating the Natura 2000 Day with a series of events throughout May – Month of the Natura 2000.

Additional information:
Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.
Sandwich Tern
In Bulgaria, the Sandwich Tern nests only on Pomorie and Atanasovsko lakes. Thanks to years of hard work, today the population of the species in Pomorie Lake is the largest on the Balkan Peninsula. Listed as an endangered species and included in the Birds Directive, the Sandwich Tern and its habitats are protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.
