Pomorie Volunteer Academy in action

We combined help with holiday, visiting the Pomorie Lake at the end of May. We held a mini meeting of the volunteer academy, which we formed in November.

The meeting took place over two days during the May holidays and we took turns between the information and volunteer activities and some field visits. Although our goal was the Visitor Center on the bank of Pomorie Lake, on the way there we visited other wetlands – the Burgas Lakes. In particular it was the bird shelter of the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation near Atanasovsko Lake - also part of the ecological network Natura 2000. There we saw some of the rare and protected species - Eurasian Spoonbills, Common Shelducks, terns. We even had the opportunity to get some passers-by acquainted with the bird diversity of the protected area. Although they were from Burgas, they did not know the rare species of birds that can be seen so close to the city.

We had a short talk at the Pomorie Lake Visitor Center about the Natura 2000 protected area, the species that inhabit it and the protection measures that have been applied by Green Balkans for decades. Each of us had the opportunity to observe with a fieldscope and binoculars up close the species we talked about.

We took care about the building’s appearance by planting beautiful flowers in the garden and cleaning around to make the place even better.

Martin, Lachezara and Denitsa were very enthusiastic, absorbing all the information and helping with everything! Here is what Denitsa finally shared: "I liked the very atmosphere of the place and that we had the opportunity to observe the birds so closely in their natural rhythm of life. This is really good, and even more so for people who do not know a lot about biology, because they appreciate the importance of preserving such places and species." And then Martin added: "I also liked the atmosphere and how the building itself is equipped with binoculars, information boards, TVs... Seeing the birds so close and not disturbing them at the same time is a really wonderful and unique experience.”

We would like to thank for everyone's participation!
